Yes — walls over 1.2 m (4 ft) of exposed height, or any wall carrying a surcharge load such as a driveway or structure above, generally require a permit and engineered design. We handle the engineering and permit process end to end.

Why do retaining walls fail?

Accepted Answer

Almost always water. Without drain tile, clear drainage rock and a geotextile separator, water builds hydrostatic pressure behind the wall and pushes it out. Inadequate base compaction and missing geogrid reinforcement are the next most common causes.

Can I just build two short walls instead of one tall one?

Accepted Answer

Sometimes, but not to avoid engineering. If tiered walls are closer together than roughly twice the height of the lower wall, they are usually assessed as one combined structure. We'll tell you at the quote stage which applies to your slope.
